Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a former gang leader, has been sentenced to at least 40 years in prison for orchestrating the murder of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur. A jury convicted the 63-year-old in September of murder with a deadly weapon, stemming from the drive-by shooting that occurred in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996.
Prosecutors successfully argued that while Davis did not pull the trigger himself, he was the mastermind behind the assassination. Davis’s own admissions, including in his memoir “Compton Street Legend,” where he stated he provided the firearm used in the crime, were crucial to the conviction. These public statements, initially made in exchange for protection from prosecution, ultimately voided that agreement and led to his trial.
The conviction marks a significant breakthrough in one of hip-hop’s most enduring cold cases, which has captivated fans for nearly three decades. During the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo highlighted how Davis had “publicly grandstanded” and bragged about his involvement for years.
Tupac Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, spoke movingly in court about the profound and lasting impact of her brother’s death on her family. She emphasized his potential and his desire to improve his community, asking the judge for the maximum sentence to allow Davis to “contemplate what you’ve done to the world.”
Davis himself, when given a chance to speak, stated, “I’m good. I’m gonna appeal this case for sure.” Judge Carli Kierny sternly addressed Davis, stating, “You don’t get to take a man from his family… his whole future from him, and just walk away from it. Especially when that man is Tupac Shakur.”
The investigation gained momentum from Davis’s detailed accounts of the events, including his presence in the vehicle from which the fatal shots were fired. His nephew, Orlando Anderson, who allegedly fired the weapon, died in an unrelated shooting in 1998.
