Authorities in Iganga District have taken into custody Emmanuel Mugabi, a 38-year-old assistant accountant for Bugweri Town Council, on suspicion of impersonation and extortion. Mugabi is accused of posing as the Iganga Municipality Assistant RDC, Tonny Nabala, to solicit funds from public servants.
According to police reports, the alleged impersonation began when an unknown individual, later identified as Mugabi, made telephone calls to civil servants who were reportedly under investigation for corruption. The suspect allegedly demanded sums ranging from Shs100,000 to Shs300,000, promising to quash their ongoing cases.
The case was formally registered at Iganga Central Police Station after Assistant RDC Tonny Nabala reported the fraudulent calls on October 13. A police task force gathered intelligence that ultimately led to Mugabi’s arrest.
Preliminary findings suggest that Mugabi had already made contact with multiple civil servants. He is currently detained at Iganga Central Police Station as investigations proceed. Police intend to charge him with impersonation and obtaining money by false pretences, offenses punishable under the Penal Code Act.
Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha has urged the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant against individuals who falsely represent themselves as government officials to commit acts of extortion.
