The community of Jinja Senior Secondary School is in mourning following the recovery of Reagan Wamala, a Senior Six candidate, from the River Nile. Wamala’s body was found on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, near the old railway bridge, three days after he was reported missing and presumed drowned. His death comes just weeks before he was due to sit for his Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.
Classmates have shared that Wamala had been troubled by personal issues, leading some to suspect suicide. However, his family remains bewildered, stating that he had not disclosed any significant problems. His elder brother, Assad Magumba, mentioned that the family had recently settled his outstanding school fees, expecting him to focus on his studies. “As a family, we are shocked because he never told us what was bothering him so that we could counsel him,” Mr. Magumba stated.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding Wamala’s death. The Mayor of Jinja City Southern Division, Kasirye Simon, confirmed that initial reports indicated Wamala had been with colleagues before his disappearance. The presence of wounds on his head has added to the mystery, prompting authorities to await the results of a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death. Some unconfirmed reports suggest the possibility of an assault, but police are yet to confirm these allegations.
At Jinja SSS, Wamala is remembered as a bright, quiet, and friendly student. The deputy headteacher, William Ongom Olara, expressed shock at his passing, noting that Wamala had recently participated in a dedication ceremony for Senior Six candidates. The school and the wider community are seeking closure as they await the official findings into this tragic event.
Wamala is expected to be buried later this week in Buikwe District. For assistance, young people facing difficulties are encouraged to speak with trusted individuals. https://www.monitor.ug/uganda/news/national/jinja-s6-candidate-s-death-leaves-family-school-seeking-answers-5632126
