Kabale District is embarking on an ambitious road infrastructure upgrade, focusing on improving community access and boosting agricultural trade. The district has officially commenced the rehabilitation of three key community access roads, spanning a total of 58.2 kilometers. This vital project is being financed through the district’s Shs1 billion Road Maintenance Grant, with a substantial Shs494.7 million earmarked for these specific road sections.
The selected roads include the 23.9-kilometer Bushuro–Rwakihiirwa–Rwene road, which will undergo work at a cost of Shs203.15 million, serving Maziba and Buhara sub-counties. Additionally, the 10-kilometer Kakoma–Butuza–Kyasano–Bunagana road in Kamuganguzi Sub-county will receive Shs85 million for its rehabilitation. The third project involves the 24.3-kilometer Rwonkoronga–Nyombi–Kyevu–Kagoma–Katete Nkora road, traversing Kahungye and Butanda sub-counties, with an allocated budget of Shs206.55 million.
District Engineer Januario Turinawe Bagamuhunda detailed that the scope of works will encompass essential tasks such as site preparation, clearing, earthworks, and crucial drainage improvements to ensure the longevity of the roads. Local authorities, including Chief Administrative Officer Robert Mugabe and LCV Chairperson Denis Nzeirwe, have urged residents to actively monitor the progress of these projects. They stressed the importance of reporting any substandard construction to ensure quality and value for the allocated funds.
Officials believe that improved road connectivity will be instrumental in encouraging farmers to engage in commercial agriculture, thereby enhancing their ability to transport produce to markets and access broader economic opportunities. The district also plans to widen these roads to accommodate increased transportation demands for agricultural goods and other commodities. Residents have been encouraged to take ownership of these projects and to participate in their maintenance, including utilizing the monthly National Cleaning Day for upkeep of roads and drainage channels.
This initiative aligns with the NRM manifesto’s prioritization of district and community roads to foster better connectivity and market access. There is also a stated intention to potentially double the Road Maintenance Grant for districts in the future, contingent on available funding. The government hopes these improvements will directly contribute to tackling household poverty and boosting local economies.
