Kira Municipality Member of Parliament, George Musisi, has expressed strong disapproval following the High Court’s decision to allow his election rival, Daniel Kananura, to withdraw an election petition. Musisi labelled the move as an abuse of court processes and a drain on valuable time and resources that could have been used for the betterment of Kira Municipality’s residents.
Musisi dismissed Kananura’s explanation for the withdrawal, which cited a lack of sufficient evidence and issues with his former legal team. The MP argued that Kananura had ample opportunity to gather and present any evidence supporting his allegations of irregularities in the 2026 parliamentary election but failed to do so.
“The excuse the petitioner gave that his lawyers didn’t file sufficient evidence in time is certainly just that, an excuse. He had all the time to gather all the evidence, but he couldn’t gather what doesn’t exist,” Musisi stated, emphasizing that the petition lacked a solid factual and legal foundation.
Kananura had initially alleged that the election was marred by violence, bribery, and rigging, seeking to have Musisi’s victory nullified. However, he later applied to withdraw the petition, claiming that crucial evidence was unavailable. The court granted the withdrawal, directing both parties to bear their own costs for the withdrawal application.
Musisi challenged Kananura to publicly present the evidence he claimed his lawyers failed to introduce, offering to fund a press conference for this purpose. The MP stressed that election contests must be grounded in law and fact and suggested Kananura owes the people of Kira an apology for pursuing a case that was not fully resolved.
