President Yoweri Museveni has greenlit the establishment of a new Presidential Industrial Skilling Hub, which will cater to the youth of Luweero, Nakasongola, and Nakaseke districts. This directive is part of a broader government strategy to enhance practical skills development and tackle the persistent issue of youth unemployment.
Eng. Raymond Kamugisha, Director of Presidential Projects and Industrial Hubs at State House, announced the directive during a meeting with Greater Luweero leaders. He urged the leaders to identify and secure suitable land for the proposed facility, emphasizing its role in providing vocational training.
The Presidential Industrial Skilling Hubs are designed to address critical challenges such as unemployment, rapid population growth, and limited access to formal education. The program equips young individuals with tangible skills, enabling them to start their own businesses, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the nation’s economic growth, irrespective of their prior educational background.
Currently, these hubs offer training in trades like welding, carpentry, tailoring, and bakery. President Museveni has also directed the addition of new courses, including electrical installation, automotive mechanics, plumbing, and knitting and weaving, to broaden the skill sets available to beneficiaries.
Discussions at the meeting also focused on strengthening the transition from training to employment. Local leaders were encouraged to consider qualified graduates for district contracts, providing them with valuable experience and income-generating potential. Graduates were also urged to proactively seek opportunities and leverage financing options available through Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations (SACCOs).
One local leader even offered land for the proposed facility, underscoring community support for the initiative. The new hub is expected to significantly increase access to vocational training in the Greater Luweero region, fostering self-employment and enterprise development among the youth. Currently, Presidential Industrial Skilling Hubs accommodate around 240 trainees per cycle, with a training duration of six months.
