Rubanda District’s Finance, Works and Planning Sectoral Committee has completed a two-day inspection of local infrastructure projects, identifying areas requiring urgent attention to enhance road durability and public safety.
The committee’s monitoring exercise, held from October 12-13, 2026, focused on several road sections and crossings, including the Harutenga–Nyamasizi–Kabandama–Habushororo road and drainage improvements along the Hamurwa–Rwondo–Kabisha–Mukisa–Nyakatare road.
Concerns were raised regarding the potential impact of drainage systems on surrounding communities. Councillor Adrine Tibenda emphasized the need for careful planning of trenches and check dams to prevent flood damage to homes and property during heavy rains. She stressed the importance of environmental safeguards during construction to minimize damage and protect residents.
The inspection also identified specific needs for road improvements. At the Kacwekano–Kyabahinga road, the committee recommended the installation of additional culverts to enhance drainage and long-term durability. Furthermore, they advised spot murraming on slippery road sections, a process that improves road surfaces with suitable gravel, to ensure safer passage, particularly during the wet season.
Community involvement was also underscored as crucial for the longevity of these public works. Wilfred Arinda Nsheeka urged residents to actively participate in the maintenance of completed projects, stating that community stewardship is vital for preserving infrastructure.
Vincent Kibuye, Secretary for Works and Planning, commended the committee’s diligence and highlighted the importance of such oversight in ensuring government projects are implemented effectively and deliver lasting benefits. He noted that addressing the condition of crossings was a priority, and praised the technical team for executing council resolutions.
This inspection is part of broader efforts by Rubanda District to bolster accountability and ensure public funds are utilized for sustainable infrastructure development. These findings will inform future planning and interventions to improve the quality and safety of the district’s road network.
