Joseph Sebatindira, Uganda’s highly acclaimed table tennis player, is heading back to Sheffield for the ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge. This will be his third and final appearance in the prestigious U12 tournament, as he approaches his 12th birthday.
Last year, Sebatindira triumphed in Sheffield, clinching the title as the top performer among the best 20 boys under 12 globally. Now, he and his coach, Alvin Katumba, are aiming for a memorable farewell performance by defending the championship.
Uganda Table Tennis Association vice president Caroline Aziku highlighted the significance of Sebatindira’s participation, noting that only 36 slots are available worldwide for this event. “It’s an exciting opportunity for him as an athlete but also for us as a country to be among the few associations to partake of the 36 slots available for all players across the world,” Aziku stated.
The Hopes programme has a history of nurturing future stars, with notable alumni including Olympic medalist Truls Moregard and Hana Goda. As Sebatindira prepares for this final U12 competition, the association looks forward to his continued growth. “Growth comes with challenges, exposure, opportunities. So, we are looking forward to how well Joseph turns out in the next era of his game as an athlete and as a person,” Aziku added.
While fellow star Patience Anyango, a three-time Africa Hopes champion, will miss the event to focus on her Primary Leaving Examinations, her absence opens doors for emerging talent. “Whenever a star quits the stage, it creates opportunity for others to step in,” Aziku explained. “The gap Joseph and Patience are leaving isn’t a gap but an opportunity for new champions.”
