Uganda’s rising table tennis star, Joseph Sebatindira, returns to Sheffield for his third and final ITTF World Hopes Week & Challenge. Having clinched the title in 2025 among the world’s top under-12 players, Sebatindira is determined to make a strong exit from the age category. His previous appearances include the 2024 edition in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Sebatindira, who will be approaching his 12th birthday soon, has already amassed multiple world titles since the age of nine, making him Uganda’s most decorated table tennis player. The Uganda Table Tennis Association (UTTA) sees this event as a significant opportunity for him and the country to showcase talent on a global stage.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for him as an athlete but also for us as a country to be among the few associations to partake of the 36 slots available for all players across the world,” stated UTTA vice president Caroline Aziku. “And our expectation of him is nothing less than what he achieved last year. We hope that he also garners more exposure because some of his opponents will be new.”

The Hopes program has a history of nurturing future stars, with notable alumni including Olympic silver medalist Truls Moregard and top players Hana Goda and Adriana Diaz. As this marks Sebatindira’s last Hopes event, Aziku anticipates new challenges and opportunities for his continued development.

While Africa Hopes champion Patience Anyango, a dominant force in the U12 category, will miss the Sheffield event to focus on her Primary Leaving Examinations, UTTA is confident about the future. Aziku noted that emerging talents have already begun challenging Sebatindira and Anyango in recent local tournaments, indicating a promising pipeline of new champions ready to step up.
