President Yoweri Museveni recently engaged in discussions with Mehamood Hosein, the founder and chairman of the US-based Hive Global Group, focusing on a strategic alliance to advance Uganda’s capabilities in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
The meeting, held at State House Entebbe, centered on a shared ambition to position Uganda as the leading AI nation on the African continent and a pivotal global hub for AI computing and intelligence services.
President Museveni expressed his eagerness to learn from Hosein’s expertise, acknowledging AI as a critical emerging sector. “AI is a gap. I am happy to learn from you and what you bring to the AI industry,” stated the President.
Hosein, who also founded the Massachusetts-based Hosein Family Office and played a key role in developing data-storage infrastructure at EMC Corporation, highlighted the transformative potential of AI. He explained that the world is entering an “intelligence age” powered by AI infrastructure, analogous to the “information age” driven by computing infrastructure he helped build.
Plans were outlined for ‘HIVE Uganda’ and ‘The Global AI Village,’ an ambitious initiative designed to integrate advanced AI computing, robust energy infrastructure, education, research, and international investment. This project aims to transform Uganda into a producer and exporter of AI-powered services, enabling it to compete globally.
“My vision is to help make Uganda the leading AI nation in Africa by building the critical infrastructure needed to transform the continent into a major global computing hub,” Hosein remarked. He emphasized that the initiative would foster a comprehensive technology ecosystem, creating opportunities for Uganda’s youth, attracting global tech firms, and spurring new industries.
The success of such large-scale AI computing infrastructure hinges on reliable and cost-effective energy, an area where Uganda’s energy sector could play a crucial role. Notably, Hosein indicated that the proposed initiative would seek private international capital, ensuring development without increasing Uganda’s national debt.
