Members of Parliament in Uganda have taken a significant step towards improving healthcare standards with the introduction of the Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Bill, 2026. Dr. Michael Bukenya, the Member of Parliament for Bukuya County in Kassanda District, received approval from Parliament to introduce this landmark legislation.

The proposed bill is designed to create a robust framework for safeguarding patients as they navigate the healthcare system. It aims to ensure that individuals receive care that meets established quality and safety benchmarks.

A key objective of the bill is to consolidate and streamline the processes for registering and licensing healthcare facilities. This will help in harmonizing standards and ensuring that all facilities operate under consistent regulations.

Furthermore, the legislation seeks to establish a dedicated Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Authority. This body will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the bill and ensuring adherence to the prescribed minimum standards.

The bill will set clear minimum standards for quality healthcare and patient safety that all healthcare facilities must comply with. This initiative is expected to lead to a more transparent and accountable healthcare sector, ultimately benefiting patients across Uganda.

This development marks a proactive approach by the Ugandan government to address critical issues within its health service delivery system, prioritizing the well-being and security of all citizens utilizing medical services.
