Parliament has cleared the way for the introduction of the groundbreaking Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Bill, 2026. The legislation, championed by Dr. Michael Bukenya, MP for Bukuya County, seeks to fundamentally improve the patient experience within Uganda’s healthcare system.
The core objective of the Bill is to institute comprehensive safeguards and protections for individuals interacting with healthcare services. This initiative aims to ensure that patients receive care that meets stringent quality and safety benchmarks.
A key component of the proposed law is the establishment of a centralized and harmonized system for the registration and licensing of all healthcare facilities. This will bring much-needed order and oversight to the sector.
Furthermore, the Bill proposes the creation of a dedicated Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Authority. This independent body will be tasked with overseeing the implementation of the new standards and ensuring compliance across the board.
By prescribing minimum standards for quality healthcare and patient safety, the Bill intends to elevate the level of care provided by all healthcare facilities, ultimately fostering a safer environment for patients and improving health outcomes nationwide.
This development marks a significant step towards a more accountable and patient-centric healthcare system in Uganda.
