Uganda’s police and army have significantly ramped up their operations against the charcoal trade, focusing on key production areas in the West Nile, northern Uganda, and Teso sub-regions. The joint security forces are implementing a strict no-tolerance policy, aiming to dismantle the entire supply chain from production to trade.

Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma stated that individuals caught transporting charcoal in any vehicle will face arrest. This action is in direct response to a presidential order aimed at curbing the destructive practices associated with charcoal production, which have been linked to significant environmental degradation.

The crackdown is a response to ongoing concerns about deforestation and the broader environmental impact of charcoal extraction. While environmental advocates have welcomed the strengthened enforcement, traders and consumers are expressing concerns about potential economic repercussions and increased costs for alternative energy sources. The government has previously defended the ban, emphasizing its commitment to restoring the nation’s natural environment and forests. This heightened enforcement signals a serious commitment to protecting Uganda’s ecological resources.

Official statistics indicate that a vast majority of Ugandan households still rely on biomass, including charcoal, for cooking fuel. Efforts are underway to promote cleaner alternatives like Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), electricity, and biogas, but adoption rates remain low, highlighting the challenge of transitioning away from traditional fuels.

The intensified operation underscores the government’s resolve to combat illegal environmental activities and promote sustainable practices across the country.
