Child marriage remains a significant impediment to the progress and well-being of young girls across Uganda. This issue, which robs girls of their childhood, education, and future, is under renewed scrutiny as the International Day of the Girl Child approaches.

Activists and stakeholders are emphasizing the critical need for increased investment in girls’ rights. This includes ensuring access to quality education, healthcare, and protection from violence and exploitation. Ending child marriage is not just a matter of protecting individual girls but is also crucial for the broader social and economic development of Uganda.

Early marriage often leads to severe health complications for young mothers, perpetuates cycles of poverty, and limits the potential of an entire generation. Addressing this requires a multi-faceted approach involving legal reforms, community engagement, and robust enforcement of existing laws. Furthermore, empowering girls with education and economic opportunities is key to enabling them to make informed choices about their lives and futures.

There is a strong call for collective action from government, civil society, parents, and communities to create an environment where every girl can thrive, free from the threat of early marriage and empowered to reach her full potential.
