Residents of Kabowa in Rubaga Division received free health screenings and fitness assessments on October 9th as part of the inaugural “Ubuntu Circle” event organized by the Zannya Africa Foundation (ZAF). This event marks the launch of a new monthly sports-based program designed to encourage healthier lifestyles and facilitate the early detection of potential health issues.

The wellness event, held at St Anne Village, provided participants with crucial health checks including blood pressure, blood glucose, pulse, and oxygen level measurements. Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments and fitness-age evaluations were also conducted, offering valuable insights into individual health status.

Refugee Healthcare Providers (RHCPI) were on hand to offer screening, counseling, and general medical examinations, addressing concerns such as HIV and malaria. RHCPI has also established referral systems with local health centers and government hospitals to ensure follow-up care for those needing further medical attention.

“Our goal is to amplify the voices of young people from vulnerable communities about environmental justice through sports. The free health camp is to promote wellness among the people we work in,” stated Kuluthum Najjuma Bint, ZAF’s executive director. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving Kabowa Dream Team Futsal Club, the Futsal Association of Uganda, Makerere University’s Department of Exercise and Sports Science, RHCPI, and Zurah Pharmacy.

ZAF plans to continue hosting these monthly “Ubuntu Circles,” each lasting three to five hours. These sessions will integrate physical activity with health education and community engagement focused on health, environmental issues, and social care. Makerere University will provide expertise in fitness assessment and exercise guidance, while Zannya Metric will manage participant data and communication.

This program precedes ZAF’s upcoming “EcoFit Camp” in December, which focuses on sports, wellness, and climate education. ZAF has also been recognized for its broader work, including nominations for awards related to climate education and its ongoing efforts in sexual and reproductive health awareness.
