DRC Faces Double Epidemic: Cholera Claims Over 3,600 Lives Amidst Ebola Outbreak

The Democratic Republic of Congo is battling a devastating cholera epidemic, with at least 3,644 fatalities recorded by the end of September 2026. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the country is simultaneously managing a separate Ebola outbreak, placing immense strain on its healthcare infrastructure.
As of the end of September, over 125,000 suspected cholera cases have been documented. The situation has notably worsened, with the week ending September 28 alone seeing 2,932 suspected cases and 86 deaths, an increase from the previous week. This surge is attributed to insufficient access to clean water and adequate sanitation facilities.
Provinces such as South Kivu, North Kivu, and Haut-Katanga are disproportionately affected, accounting for nearly 60% of all reported cases. The transmission remains particularly high in areas where cholera is endemic. Efforts to contain the disease are significantly hampered by insecurity and logistical challenges, especially in eastern DRC, where violence restricts medical teams’ access to affected regions.
The remoteness of villages from healthcare facilities also contributes to delayed treatment and increased mortality rates. Environmental factors, including reliance on well water and rainfall, further exacerbate the risk of contamination and spread.
Response initiatives are underway, including the establishment of water chlorination sites and disinfection of households and latrines in the hardest-hit areas. Vaccination campaigns are also being prepared, targeting specific regions and planning for cross-border cooperation with the Republic of Congo.
The cholera crisis unfolds while the DRC continues to grapple with Ebola, which has caused over 4,300 deaths. The dual epidemics underscore the critical need for improved public health infrastructure, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services.
Cholera is a life-threatening diarrheal disease that can be fatal within hours if not treated promptly. Access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and immediate medical care are crucial for prevention and reducing deaths.
