The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) has initiated a dialogue with digital journalists, emphasizing the critical role of online media in promoting inclusive reporting. This engagement seeks to foster a stronger partnership between the EOC and digital media practitioners to heighten public awareness about discrimination, marginalization, affirmative action, and the pursuit of equal opportunities for all Ugandans.
Dr. Shaft Nasser Mukwaya, Secretary to the EOC, highlighted the significance of digital media as a vital channel for reaching the public and stakeholders due to its speed, accessibility, and extensive reach. “Digital media has transformed how we communicate with the public. It offers us an opportunity to reach millions of Ugandans quickly and directly. If we are to effectively deliver our mandate, we must embrace these platforms and work closely with the journalists who use them,” Mukwaya stated.
He further elaborated that strategic alliances with online media could significantly aid the Commission in connecting with communities that may have limited access to information about their rights and available remedies for discrimination. Yusuf Muziransa, Principal Information and Communications Officer at EOC, urged digital journalists to collaborate in publicizing the Commission’s mandate, functions, and programs. “We believe stronger collaboration with online media can help bridge this gap and ensure that more people understand their rights and know where to seek redress,” Muziransa commented.
Muziransa also encouraged journalists to give more prominence to the experiences of vulnerable and marginalized communities, such as women, persons with disabilities, older individuals, and children. He stressed that inclusive reporting should not only highlight challenges but also critically examine the structural barriers hindering these groups’ participation and benefit from Uganda’s development. The EOC expressed optimism that this sustained engagement will bolster public understanding, increase the visibility of its work, and ultimately enable more Ugandans to benefit from its services.
