The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is actively seeking supplementary funding to breathe new life into the stalled Kitintale Market project. The authority intends to secure these resources through the Kampala Capital City Roads Rehabilitation Project, which is financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

According to KCCA Deputy Executive Director Benon Moses Kigenyi, the market’s construction halted due to prior design modifications and a lack of sufficient funds. Some of the work already completed will need to be redone to meet the revised design specifications, impacting the project’s schedule.

The authority plans to leverage the market development and public transport infrastructure component of the AfDB-funded project to finance the remaining construction. Kigenyi expressed optimism that securing these funds will allow construction to resume promptly, ultimately benefiting traders and the wider community.

A significant update to the market’s design is the inclusion of a rooftop parking facility. This addition aims to alleviate accessibility issues, particularly for shoppers arriving in private vehicles, by providing convenient parking directly above the market stalls.

The revised plan is expected to enhance the overall trading environment and improve access to market services once completed. However, the resumption and pace of work remain contingent on the successful acquisition of the requested funding, with no specific timeline provided by KCCA for when this might be approved or when the market will be finished.
