Frank Kabuye, the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate and former Member of Parliament for Kassanda South, is set to present Declaration of Results (DR) forms to the Mubende High Court. These documents are intended to bolster a vote recount ordered for Friday, October 16.
The recount follows an election petition filed by independent candidate Eria Mubiru, who contested the results of the January 15 parliamentary election. Justice Mary Babirye ordered the recount.
Kabuye, who finished third in the officially declared results, expressed his expectation that the recount will clarify any discrepancies in the vote tally. “I expect this recount to reveal the truth about what happened during the election and establish whether the votes were accurately counted,” Kabuye stated.
He confirmed his intention to provide the necessary DR forms from various polling stations to assist the court in verifying the election outcome. “I will present the relevant Declaration of Results forms from the polling stations to help establish what the voters actually decided,” he added.
Despite believing he was the rightful winner, Kabuye did not personally file a petition. He explained his decision was to allow the electoral process to unfold naturally. “I chose not to go to court because I wanted the process to take its course. I believe the recount will help bring the truth to light,” he commented.
The Electoral Commission had declared NRM’s Hajji Abdul Bisaso the winner with 11,765 votes, followed by Mubiru with 11,050 votes. Kabuye secured 9,231 votes, while Julius Kizza of ANT received 71.
The upcoming recount is crucial for verifying the declared tallies and ensuring the results accurately reflect the ballots cast. The findings could significantly impact the proceedings related to Mubiru’s petition.
