Tragic incidents in Kanara Sub-county, Kitagwenda District, have prompted MP Robert Mugabe to urge the government to address a growing threat from stray dogs. Two children, aged between six and ten, have reportedly lost their lives due to suspected dog bites, with another five-year-old child sustaining severe injuries and requiring medical attention.
The lawmaker brought the urgent matter to Parliament, appealing to the Ministries of Agriculture and Health to take swift action. The attacks, primarily reported in areas including Kigarama and Kanara Central, have instilled fear among residents who see both their lives and livestock at risk.
MP Mugabe emphasized the need for containment of the roaming dogs and emphasized that victims must receive adequate medical care, including specialized treatment for the injured child and support for the bereaved families. The urgency stems from concerns about the availability of essential anti-rabies treatment.
Officials at Kanara Health Centre III confirmed treating adult patients for dog bites but stated they lacked the necessary anti-rabies medication, necessitating referrals to Rukunyu Hospital. This situation highlights potential gaps in local health facilities’ capacity to manage such emergencies and underscores the critical importance of timely post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent rabies, a potentially fatal disease.
Residents are pleading for effective measures to control the stray dog population, improve access to medical treatment, and prevent further loss of life and property. As of the time of reporting, the relevant ministries had yet to issue a public statement regarding the MP’s concerns.
