Uganda’s agricultural sector has a new champion in the fight against malnutrition with the introduction of a vibrant purple sweet potato variety by the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO). This new crop boasts a rich profile of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins which give it its striking colour, alongside essential vitamins A and C.
The launch, coinciding with World Food Day and a centenary celebration of agricultural research at the Mbarara Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MBAZARDI), was officiated by Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze. The event underscored innovations aimed at improving food security and promoting climate-resilient farming practices.
Minister Tumwebaze highlighted the strategic importance of nutrient-dense crops in government initiatives to eradicate malnutrition and enhance farmer incomes. He described the purple sweet potato as more than just food, but as a form of “preventative medicine on a plate” that can help protect communities from dietary deficiencies and reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Martin Ameu, a plant breeder at NARO, explained that the variety was developed to offer high yields, resilience to challenging weather, and maximum nutritional value. NARO is preparing to make clean, disease-free planting vines available to farmers through MBAZARDI and local agricultural extension workers, commencing in March 2027. This initiative aims to ensure widespread adoption and access for farmers across the region.
The introduction of this purple sweet potato variety marks a significant step in NARO’s ongoing efforts to develop crop solutions that improve public health, support rural livelihoods, and strengthen Uganda’s overall food production capabilities. The availability of planting material is expected to boost its uptake among smallholder farmers.
