Francis Kasilye, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), has once again been elected as the chairperson of Lugeye Village in Kakiri Town Council, Wakiso District. This victory comes after a repeat election, necessitated by the cancellation of previous results due to irregularities and disputes.
The rerun poll, held on Thursday at St Stephen’s Church grounds, saw Kasilye garner a significant 331 votes. His closest competitor, Ibrahim Musisi of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), received 115 votes. The presiding officer, Vincent Byamukama, declared Kasilye the winner after a vote that was described as peaceful and orderly.
Heavy police deployment was evident at the polling station throughout the day, a measure implemented to prevent a recurrence of the disputes and potential violence that had marred the earlier election. The Electoral Commission’s decision to order a repeat poll underscored the importance of ensuring a fair and transparent process.
Following his win, Kasilye expressed gratitude to the residents for their continued trust. He extended an olive branch to his opponents, urging them to collaborate for the betterment and development of the village. Kasilye emphasized that community welfare should supersede political differences, advocating for unity in service delivery.
Ronald Ssemaganda, a former parliamentary aspirant, attributed Kasilye’s success to the strong unity and determination of his supporters. He also commended the security forces for their professionalism in maintaining peace during the election, calling for similar standards in upcoming repeat elections elsewhere. The Lugeye election concluded without incident, securing Kasilye another term in office.
