Political leaders from various Ugandan parties gathered in Jinja for a crucial two-day dialogue focused on national cohesion and improving governance in the wake of the 2026 General Elections. Organized by the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) Uganda in partnership with the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) and the National Consultative Forum (NCF), the meeting aimed to address growing political divisions and explore pathways to national reconciliation.
Discussions centered on inclusive governance and methods for managing political differences, including the potential of consociational democracy, a model emphasizing power-sharing and consensus-building. NIMD Uganda Country Director Primus Bahiigi highlighted concerns regarding the safety and political futures of some actors, questioning public trust and the ability of all citizens to participate freely in national life.
Opposition leaders used the forum to voice strong concerns over alleged human rights abuses, arbitrary arrests, detentions in unacknowledged facilities, and the prolonged remand of suspects. Representatives from JEEMA, PFF, UPC, and FDC called for concrete steps towards reconciliation, stressing that the government bears significant responsibility for demonstrating a commitment to dialogue and unity.
While the ruling NRM party, represented by its Eastern Uganda vice chairperson Calvin Echodu, reiterated a commitment to cooperation for national development and peace, opposition figures insisted that calls for unity must be backed by tangible actions addressing accountability and respect for fundamental rights. The meeting sought to develop proposals for strengthening democratic institutions and fostering an environment of trust and free political participation.
The effectiveness of the dialogue will ultimately be measured by its ability to translate discussions into practical commitments on reconciliation and accountability, particularly given the opposition’s insistence that these issues are paramount for genuine national unity.
