A travel consultant based in Kampala has been charged with an alleged large-scale theft amounting to approximately Shs1.24 billion. Abbey Serunkuma, 42, is accused of misappropriating $320,122 from his employer, Africa Travel Limited, where he held the dual role of travel consultant and account manager.

Serunkuma appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 16, 2026. He entered a plea of not guilty to the theft charges, which stem from alleged offenses occurring between March and September of the same year at the company’s head offices on Kampala Road.

The prosecution detailed the substantial sum allegedly stolen, highlighting the gravity of the accusations. The defense, led by counsel Swaibu Kitakule, indicated an intention to apply for bail. However, the bail hearing was postponed due to the absence of the state prosecutor.

Mr. Kitakule expressed concerns that his client was being targeted and suggested the complainant was using criminal proceedings to harass Serunkuma, noting the complainant’s alleged failure to cooperate with police during initial investigations. The defense sought to have the complainant summoned by the court.

Presiding Senior Principal Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko denied the request to summon the complainant at this preliminary stage, stating it was premature. Magistrate Nankya subsequently remanded Serunkuma until October 30, 2026, when his bail application is expected to be heard.
