Uganda’s private sector demonstrated resilience in September, marking its 20th successive month of expansion, according to the latest Stanbic Bank Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The growth was primarily fueled by a notable uptick in new orders and business activity across various sectors. Companies reported higher output levels as they worked to meet increased demand from both domestic and international markets.
Despite the positive growth trajectory, businesses are grappling with escalating operational expenses. The cost of fuel and transportation saw significant increases, directly impacting the cost of doing business. This inflationary pressure extended to other inputs, forcing many companies to adjust their pricing strategies.
Respondents indicated that while demand remained robust, the rising cost of doing business posed a considerable challenge. Some firms managed to absorb these increases, while others passed on a portion of the costs to consumers, potentially affecting future demand.
The survey also highlighted a mixed picture in employment. While some sectors expanded their workforce to cater to the increased activity, others held steady or slightly reduced staffing levels due to cost-saving measures. Looking ahead, businesses expressed cautious optimism, anticipating continued growth but remaining watchful of the inflationary environment and its potential impact on profitability and consumer spending.
The overall sentiment suggests a dynamic economic landscape where growth is present, but the management of rising costs is a key strategic imperative for sustained success. The continued expansion, however, points to underlying strength in Uganda’s private sector economy.
