Dr. Maria Luise Prean, an Austrian missionary and the driving force behind Vision for Africa International, has died at the age of 87. For decades, Dr. Prean was a staunch advocate for orphans and vulnerable children in Uganda, establishing an organization that has significantly improved access to education and essential services across the country.

Her commitment led to the creation of Vision for Africa International, which began its journey in Germany in 2001 before extending its reach to Uganda later that same year. By 2002, the organization had a solid administrative presence in Kampala, paving the way for its extensive work in child welfare and education.

Under her guidance, the organization launched numerous initiatives, including the Vision for Africa International Christian College in Mukono (established 2012) and Vision for Africa High School in Nakifuma (founded 2019). These institutions, along with other childcare facilities and community programs, have provided thousands of children with crucial educational opportunities and support, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Dr. Prean’s tireless efforts were recognized as recently as July 2024, when First Lady Janet Museveni commended her work. Dr. Patrick Bruni, an official with Vision for Africa International, described her passing as a profound loss, stating, “We lost a mother, a friend, a pipeline of God’s blessing to people.”

While details regarding her burial arrangements are still forthcoming, Dr. Prean is expected to be laid to rest in Uganda. Her legacy continues through the organization she founded and the countless lives she touched.
