Minister of State for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, David Bahati, has underscored the vital role of discipline and integrity in shaping Uganda’s future. Speaking at Mengo Senior School during an alumni fundraising event, Minister Bahati asserted that fostering strong moral values from a young age is paramount to developing competent and patriotic citizens capable of driving national progress.
He highlighted that education must extend beyond academic prowess to encompass the cultivation of integrity, patriotism, and overall competence. According to the Minister, a strong foundation in values would significantly reduce societal issues like corruption and incompetence. “If somebody is given the right values, we would not be talking about corruption or incompetence,” Bahati stated.
The Minister commended Mengo Senior School for its commitment to holistic education and discipline, acknowledging the immense task of managing a student body of nearly 8,000. He linked this effort to Uganda’s National Development Plan IV, which prioritizes human capital development, emphasizing the need to equip the youth with skills and guidance for meaningful contribution to the nation.
Mengo Senior School Head Teacher, Grace Sebanakita Nantagya, outlined the school’s strategic plan, including the construction of the Diamond Complex. This multi-purpose facility aims to enhance academic learning, physical education, and creative talents, featuring a performing arts theatre, gymnasium, auditorium, and computer centre. While progress has been made, the school is seeking further financial support to complete the ambitious project.
Bishop Moses Banja of Namirembe Diocese echoed the importance of collective responsibility in supporting educational institutions and commended the ongoing efforts at Mengo Senior School.
