Joint security forces in Gulu have arrested two individuals suspected of murdering John Bosco Ngire, a second-year Bachelor of Education student at Gulu University. The suspects, identified as Gerald Omara, 18, a student at Good Samaritan Technical School, and Ambrose Rom, 18, both residents of Agwee Cell, Pece-Laroo Division, have reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogations.

Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke stated that the suspects guided security teams to the crime scene in Agwee Cell, where crucial evidence was recovered. This includes the victim’s shoes and the hammer believed to have been used in the attack. The deceased was reportedly struck on the head with a stone near the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment around 4:00 AM.

The incident is a stark reminder of the ongoing security concerns in the region. This killing follows another tragic event in May 2026, when Christopher Nyeko, a laboratory technician at the university’s Health Centre, was murdered near the campus. The police have indicated that once investigations are complete, the case file will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for review, and the suspects will be brought before the courts.

These events highlight a concerning trend in homicides within Uganda. According to the Police Annual Crime Report 2025, the country recorded 4,238 homicide cases. The report details various causes of death, including assault, poisoning, and mob action, underscoring the persistent challenges in maintaining public safety.
