The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is expanding its operations in Uganda with a focus on green energy, particularly green hydrogen.
Amin Mawji OBE, the AKDN Diplomatic Representative in Uganda, announced this initiative during a recent meeting with Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth. The AKDN plans to establish a facility that will extract nitrogen from water at a significantly reduced cost compared to conventional fertilizers. This development is expected to empower Ugandan farmers by providing them with a more affordable and locally sourced input, lessening their dependence on external supplies.
Mawji indicated that AKDN is actively engaged in discussions with the Ministries of Energy and Finance to secure the necessary support for this ambitious project. Beyond green energy, the network is also making substantial investments in the pharmaceutical sector, with two new industries currently under construction in the Namanve Industrial Park. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nakawa, which will also function as a university teaching hospital.
Speaker Oboth lauded AKDN’s contributions to Uganda, acknowledging their significant impact on the education, health, and energy sectors. He emphasized the network’s development-oriented approach, noting their long-standing commitment to the country’s progress over mere profit. The Speaker recalled AKDN’s historical involvement in key Ugandan projects, including educational institutions, pharmaceutical ventures, the Bujagali power project, and the former Air Uganda airline.
This venture into green hydrogen underscores AKDN’s dedication to sustainable development and its continuous efforts to enhance key sectors within Uganda.
