Bishop Robert K. Muhiirwa of the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese has called upon the Omukama of Tooro, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, to leverage his influence to secure government support for a specialized cancer treatment center in the region. The Bishop, who is a cancer survivor himself, believes such a facility would significantly improve access to vital medical care for residents of Tooro and its surrounding areas, reducing the burden of traveling for specialized treatment.

During a Mass at Virika Cathedral, attended by the King and other kingdom officials, Bishop Muhiirwa shared that he has already discussed the proposal with the Minister of Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, and was encouraged to submit a formal request. He emphasized that the proposed center would also serve as a lasting tribute to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who succumbed to cancer.

“Omukama Oyo died of cancer; I want the government to build a hospital for treatment of cancer in the Kingdom of Tooro in remembrance of Oyo, and for treatment of our people with cancer, because me I am a survivor of cancer,” Bishop Muhiirwa stated.

He urged the King and the kingdom’s leadership to actively follow up with the government on this crucial matter. Bishop Muhiirwa stressed the importance of unity between the kingdom and the Church, asserting that a single, unified voice would strengthen their appeal for the much-needed facility.

The Bishop also commended the Omukama’s recent appointment of an interim advisory team, noting their experience and reputation as valuable assets for guiding the kingdom. He pledged the Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal’s collaboration with the kingdom on various programs, including initiatives to support the youth and promote responsible behavior.

The Omukama, in his address, expressed concerns about declining parental guidance, rising teenage pregnancies, and drug use among the youth, all of which he sees as threats to the kingdom’s future. He called for a collective effort from parents, religious leaders, and the community to instill traditional values and ensure the wellbeing of young people. The King also highlighted the worrying prevalence of HIV/Aids in Fort Portal and urged for increased education on sexual health.
