Kakiri Town Council authorities have embarked on a significant tree-planting initiative across Wakiso District, aiming to reverse the effects of environmental degradation and bolster the region’s vegetation. The campaign was officially launched at the council headquarters, drawing local leaders, residents, and other stakeholders.
Moses Bagala, the Chairperson of Kakiri Town Council, highlighted that the project seeks to reintroduce trees lost to increased human activities and development. He expressed concern over the ongoing destruction of trees, emphasizing the severe threat environmental damage poses to community well-being.
“We encourage all residents to embrace this initiative by collecting seedlings and planting them in their communities,” Bagala urged. The council plans to strategically plant trees along major roads and in public spaces to beautify the area and contribute to ecological protection. Bagala also called upon financially capable individuals and businesses to support the campaign by donating or purchasing additional seedlings.
The Town Clerk, Edward Senteza, stated that the council will distribute various tree species to residents, ensuring widespread involvement in the environmental restoration effort. This initiative is open to all who wish to contribute to a greener Kakiri.
While welcoming the tree-planting drive, some residents raised concerns about the inconsistent garbage collection, particularly after monthly community cleaning exercises. They pointed out that uncollected waste often accumulates along roadsides, creating sanitation issues. Senteza assured the community that the council would work to improve waste management systems, recognizing its importance for public health and town cleanliness.
This tree-planting campaign is part of broader efforts to promote community engagement in environmental conservation and sanitation, ultimately striving for a cleaner, greener, and healthier environment for all residents.
