Uganda’s Tourism: Why Copying Rwanda’s Gorilla Model Isn’t the Answer

Uganda’s tourism sector is at a crossroads, with discussions ongoing about how best to leverage its rich natural heritage. While Rwanda’s highly successful gorilla tourism model is often cited as a benchmark, some experts argue that Uganda should chart its own course.
Ms. Diana Utamuriza, a figure in the tourism industry, believes that Uganda’s potential extends far beyond its gorilla populations. She emphasizes the need to develop and promote a diverse range of tourism products that highlight the country’s unique attractions. This includes exploring other wildlife experiences, cultural tourism, adventure activities, and eco-tourism.
Focusing solely on the Rwandan model, which heavily relies on the high-priced gorilla trekking permits, may not be the most sustainable or inclusive approach for Uganda. Uganda boasts a wider array of national parks and diverse ecosystems, offering a broader spectrum of experiences that can appeal to a larger and more varied group of tourists.
Developing unique selling propositions for each region and attraction within Uganda can create a more robust and resilient tourism industry. This approach would allow for more community involvement and benefit sharing, fostering local economies and preserving natural and cultural resources.
Instead of a direct copy-paste of the Rwandan strategy, Uganda should aim to build upon its own strengths, differentiating itself in the competitive global tourism market. This strategic differentiation is key to unlocking the full potential of Uganda’s tourism sector for long-term growth and prosperity.
