Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope IV of Busoga Kingdom has issued a strong call to action, urging men, parents, and community leaders to unite in the fight against teenage pregnancies, child marriages, and school dropouts. Speaking through the Kingdom’s Education Minister, Nassab Nantale, during an essay and debate competition at Busoga High School in Kamuli District, the King stressed that safeguarding the youth is a shared responsibility.
The competition, themed “Our Culture, Our Future: Promoting Positive Cultural Values to Keep Children in School and Protect Young People against School Dropout, Teenage Pregnancy, Child Marriage and HIV/AIDS,” brought together students from 22 schools across the kingdom. The Kyabazinga highlighted the critical role of positive cultural values in development and in protecting young people, advocating for strengthened school clubs, mentorship programs, and safe spaces for youth to discuss their challenges.
Organizers emphasized the importance of engaging men and boys in protecting children and challenging harmful practices. Efforts are underway to equip parents and communities with the necessary knowledge and skills for effective moral and cultural mentorship. The initiative also aims to promote investment in girls’ education and rights while supporting boys in becoming responsible citizens. Root causes, including the erosion of family values, poverty, and negative social norms, are being explored.
Discussions during the event focused on the impact of harmful cultural norms on adolescents. Learners debated the significant contribution of these norms to teenage pregnancies, child marriages, and school dropouts. Essay submissions from primary students and research from secondary students will be preserved in the Kyabazinga Library to inform future initiatives.
This effort underscores Busoga Kingdom’s commitment to leveraging its cultural heritage to create a protective environment for its young population. The kingdom seeks to revive traditional practices that instilled values like honesty, integrity, and hard work, thereby strengthening responsible parenting and family values.
