Schools that neglect to register their students for national examinations are effectively barring these young individuals from progressing in their educational journeys. This oversight, whether due to negligence or other failures, carries profound implications, potentially derailing years of academic effort and the aspirations of countless students.

The editorial stresses that such failures are unacceptable and demand robust accountability. The current situation, where schools may face minimal repercussions, does not adequately address the gravity of the situation. It is imperative that educational authorities implement penalties that are not only significant but also serve as a strong deterrent against future occurrences.

These penalties should be so severe that the prospect of non-compliance becomes unthinkable for any institution. This could include hefty fines, temporary or permanent closure of facilities, and severe sanctions against administrators and proprietors found culpable. The focus must be on ensuring that every eligible student has the opportunity to sit for their national exams, a fundamental right that should not be compromised by administrative lapses.

Beyond punitive measures, there is a need for enhanced oversight and support systems. Schools, particularly those in underserved areas, might require additional resources or guidance to navigate the registration processes effectively. However, this support should not excuse outright failure. The ultimate responsibility lies with the school to ensure its students are prepared and registered for these critical assessments.

By implementing strict penalties and reinforcing accountability, Uganda can safeguard the educational futures of its students and uphold the integrity of its national examination system.
