Medard Lubega Sseggona, lead counsel for detained former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, has made an urgent appeal to Ugandans to offer prayers for his client, whose health is reportedly a significant concern.
Lukwago was moved to the Mulago National Referral Hospital on Monday morning after his condition allegedly deteriorated while in detention. He had previously been receiving care at the Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) in Lubowa.
“His health condition is worrying and he urgently needs specialised treatment in India,” Sseggona stated, urging citizens of all faiths to pray for Lukwago.
Lukwago has been incarcerated since June 2026, facing charges of misprision of treason, which he denies. His legal team has consistently argued for his release on bail, citing his need for specialized medical care abroad, including follow-up treatment after a previous spinal surgery in India.
The recent transfer to Mulago coincides with his lawyers filing a fresh bail application in the High Court’s Criminal Division.
Sseggona highlighted that Lukwago’s health has been declining since his arrest due to the lack of adequate medical treatment. “We are now relying on the court to grant our client bail so that he can go to India and receive the treatment he needs. If that does not happen, then we leave everything in the hands of God,” he added.
While the situation has raised concerns among Lukwago’s supporters, Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine indicated that Lukwago was taken to Mulago for routine specialized treatment and was not in critical condition, though he acknowledged Lukwago was unwell.
These differing accounts emphasize the critical need for a clear medical assessment of Lukwago’s current health status as legal efforts for his overseas treatment continue.
