Uganda is embarking on an innovative strategy to draw more tourists by partnering with Infront Sports & Media, a prominent global sports marketing entity. This collaboration aims to position Uganda as a prime travel destination, specifically targeting the fanbase of ice hockey in Switzerland and across Europe.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ugandan Embassy in Switzerland in conjunction with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), will utilize the widespread appeal of ice hockey to showcase Uganda’s attractions. The “Explore Uganda” brand will be prominently displayed during Champions Hockey League (CHL) games, reaching audiences through stadium branding, social media engagement, and television broadcasts.
Switzerland is identified as a crucial market for Ugandan tourism, and ice hockey fans present a valuable demographic. Statistics indicate that approximately 32% of the Swiss population follows ice hockey, and a significant 65% of these fans list travel as a favored hobby. This alignment offers a unique opportunity to connect with potential visitors interested in international experiences.
The Champions Hockey League’s extensive reach further amplifies Uganda’s exposure. The league has previously garnered a cumulative seasonal television audience of around 153 million viewers across 53 territories, providing a substantial platform to introduce Uganda to a broad European and international audience.
Robert Marcel Tibaleka, Uganda’s Ambassador to Switzerland, highlighted sports’ role in fostering international connections. He expressed that ice hockey’s popularity offers a novel avenue to share Uganda’s narrative and encourage Swiss travelers to explore its wildlife, landscapes, culture, and hospitality. “We want ice hockey fans to know that beyond the thrill of the game awaits a destination offering equally unforgettable experiences and adventures,” Tibaleka stated.
Idda Wadda, Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs at UTB, believes this partnership can translate international visibility into increased visitor interest. “By leveraging the reach of the Champions Hockey League, we can inspire more travellers to discover the Pearl of Africa. Our ambition is to turn this visibility into genuine interest in Uganda and, ultimately, more visitors choosing to experience our destination,” Wadda commented.
This venture signifies Uganda’s commitment to exploring unconventional marketing channels, moving beyond traditional advertising to harness the power of international sporting events to enhance the country’s global travel profile.
