For three decades, Alex Mugarura has been a familiar face in the classrooms of Kololo Secondary School, dedicating his career to educating Uganda’s youth. Now, Mugarura finds himself in a critical fight for his life, diagnosed with intrahepatic adenocarcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer. He is reaching out to the public for financial assistance to cover the extensive costs of treatment in India.
Mugarura’s health journey began over 15 years ago in 2005 with persistent stomach pain. For years, medical professionals treated his symptoms as a peptic ulcer, offering temporary relief but failing to identify the underlying issue. A liver mass was detected during an ultrasound in 2008, but due to the manageable nature of his discomfort at the time, he continued his daily life while taking medication for his ulcer.
The situation escalated dramatically in August of this year when Mugarura experienced severe joint pain and debilitating weakness. A series of hospital visits and diagnostic tests followed, including scans at Sebbi Hospital and follow-up ultrasounds at Kiruddu National Referral Hospital, which reconfirmed the liver mass.
Further investigations at Mulago National Referral Hospital, including a CT scan on September 7, pinpointed the problem as adenocarcinoma. Subsequent consultation at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) confirmed the diagnosis of intrahepatic adenocarcinoma. The extensive diagnostic process alone has already drained Mugarura’s savings, costing him approximately Shs7 million since August.
To undergo the necessary specialized oncological treatment, including overseas travel and living expenses in India, Mugarura requires an estimated Shs145 million. He has set up a Mobile Money account (0772482838, Alex Mugarura) and a Centenary Bank account (3205643875) for contributions from well-wishers.
