The political fraternity in Uganda is mourning following the death of former Busiro South Member of Parliament, Charles Matovu, who passed away at the young age of 41. Senior officials from the National Unity Platform (NUP) confirmed the tragic news, leaving members and supporters in deep sorrow.
NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi led the tributes, expressing profound shock over the loss of a close comrade and leader within the opposition movement. Kyagulanyi took to social media to share his grief, stating that the news was very shocking and praying for strength for everyone affected by the untimely passing.
Born on April 1, 1985, Matovu was a trained electrical engineer who served the people of Busiro County South in Wakiso District during the 11th Parliament on the NUP ticket. In the January 15, 2026 parliamentary elections, he sought a fresh mandate from his constituents. Official tallies placed him second behind National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Kenan Opio, prompting Matovu to legally challenge the outcome in the High Court in Entebbe over alleged electoral irregularities.
His political journey was marked by resilience and challenges, including an incident in December 2025 where NUP reported that Matovu and his campaign team were assaulted by uniformed men while out campaigning in Busiro South. Despite these hardships, he remained an active figure in the political landscape until his passing.
At the time of reporting, specific details regarding the exact cause and location of his death, alongside official funeral arrangements, had not yet been independently confirmed by family members or authorities.
