Lawmakers in Uganda have intensified calls for a broad forensic audit into Parliament’s financial operations and expenditure. This push comes in the wake of an Inspectorate of Government (IGG) report revealing that over 180 employees were allegedly recruited irregularly.
While officials from the Ministry of Public Service are currently conducting a verification exercise to determine the validity of these appointments, members of parliament argue that checking staff lists is not enough. Legislators like Francis Zaake (Mityana Municipality) and Charles Tebandeke (Bbaale County) believe the investigation must extend to how public funds have been utilized, particularly under previous leadership.
Zaake revealed that he had previously raised alarms regarding financial mismanagement through a parliamentary commission audit subcommittee, but claimed those efforts were prematurely halted. Tebandeke further questioned the qualifications of certain recruits, pointing out anomalies among some drivers who allegedly lack basic academic credentials required for the job.
Beyond Parliament, lawmakers are urging the IGG to expand these validation exercises to other government bodies. Bufumbira County MP Eddie Kwizera noted that similar systemic issues likely plague other public sector institutions, making broader scrutiny essential for safeguarding taxpayer funds.
As the staff verification process continues, these growing demands place additional pressure on the legislature to prove transparency and accountability in its administrative and financial management.
