As the rainy season brings severe weather challenges across Uganda, taxi operators are facing renewed calls to prioritize passenger safety above journey times. Transport leaders have cautioned that wet conditions often render alternative routes and shortcuts treacherous for motorists.
Robert Sekitoreko, the vice-chairperson of the New Taxi Park and a leader within the Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF), emphasized that motorists must exercise extreme caution. While shortcuts may offer a way to bypass traffic and deliver passengers quickly, the deteriorated state of weather-affected roads poses a significant risk to lives.
“Taxi drivers are often tempted to use shortcuts because they want to drop passengers at their destinations on time. However, with the current weather conditions, I appeal to them to avoid such routes and prioritise the safety of everyone on board,” Sekitoreko stated.
Sekitoreko also directed a message toward commuters, urging them not to pressure drivers into taking faster, potentially hazardous paths. He reiterated that safety must always supersede speed to ensure everyone reaches their destination securely. While praising ongoing government infrastructure initiatives and road rehabilitation projects aimed at improving long-term transport conditions, he reminded drivers to remain vigilant.
In addition to road safety appeals, the transport leadership addressed the issue of misplaced belongings. Passengers who have lost items at the New Taxi Park or aboard departing taxis were invited to check with the park’s offices. Authorities stressed that strict proof of ownership will be required before any recovered luggage is returned to prevent fraudulent claims.
