Uganda Christian University (UCU) is celebrating a major academic milestone as it prepares to graduate its very first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student in Journalism, Media and Communication. Prever Mukasa will headline the doctoral cohort during the institution’s 27th graduation ceremony, scheduled for Friday at the main campus in Mukono.
Prof. John Mulindwa Kitayimbwa, the UCU Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, announced the historic achievement during a media briefing. He noted that Mukasa’s groundbreaking research is already available in the university library for public and academic reading. Mukasa is one of seven doctoral candidates slated to receive degrees, alongside four graduates in Education Administration and Management and two in Theology.
In total, 670 students will be awarded degrees and diplomas during this second part of UCU’s graduation series. The ceremony will be presided over by the UCU Chancellor and Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, with Uganda Development Bank Managing Director Dr Patricia Ojangole serving as the chief guest.
Statistical breakdowns of the graduation cohort reveal that male graduands account for 390 students, or 58 percent of the total, while female graduands represent 42 percent with 280 students. However, women excelled notably in academic excellence, clinching 14 of the 22 first-class degrees available. Jane Namunana emerged as the overall best student with a cumulative grade point average of 4.70, while David Kutesa was named the best overall male student.
The university also addressed challenges facing some international students, noting that several Congolese graduands will celebrate without their families due to Ebola-related cross-border travel restrictions. UCU administration has arranged special support and a festive meal for the affected students to ensure they feel embraced during their big day.
