A high-stakes commercial disagreement involving Shs71.49 billion has finally been settled through the court’s mediation process. The legal battle, which spanned nearly seven years, had previously bounced through various legal forums, including the High Court and the Supreme Court of Uganda, as well as foreign jurisdictions in England and Wales.

The underlying dispute originated from a Term Facility Agreement initially signed on December 11, 2014, and subsequently amended. Over the course of the protracted conflict, the parties became entangled in Civil Appeal No. 28 of 2025, which accumulated a staggering 34 related legal matters.

This successful resolution highlights the growing emphasis on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) within Uganda’s judicial system. Judiciary leaders have increasingly championed mediation as an effective tool to tackle mounting case backlogs, reduce lengthy litigation times, and alleviate the financial strain associated with protracted commercial trials.

Legal experts note that complex financial and commercial disputes, particularly those originating from the banking sector, stand to benefit significantly from mediation frameworks. By opting for dialogue over endless courtroom battles, parties can preserve business relationships and achieve certainty much faster.
