Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa has pressed the State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Susan Nakawuki, to fast-track the implementation of a parliamentary directive halting Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) evictions around Mt Elgon National Park.
Chairing the House session, Tayebwa warned that any delays in resolving the ongoing boundary disputes would expose local communities to escalating violence. He noted that Parliament receives similar complaints from the region almost every month.
The intervention follows raised concerns by Bungokho North Member of Parliament, Hon. Shafiga Wanyenya, who reported that UWA operations had persisted despite an earlier directive issued by Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth on October 15, 2026. Wanyenya alleged that the disregard for the order led to a violent incident in Wanale Sub-county, where four individuals were reportedly shot, resulting in one death and three injuries.
In response, Minister Nakawuki stated that her ministry has actively engaged key stakeholders, including the Prime Minister, who is scheduled to consult the President. Nakawuki noted that the plan involves suspending UWA operations for one month to allow the Ministry of Lands to clearly mark boundary stones and properly engage local communities.
