The Ugandan government has ramped up efforts to finalise a comprehensive licensing framework and regulatory standards for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide. This strategic move is designed to streamline the rapidly expanding e-mobility sector, boost revenue collection, ensure strict safety compliance, and standardise technology across the country.

Despite the existence of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act of 2024, which legally mandates the licensing of all EV charging stations, authorities note that several operators continue to function outside the formal legal framework. This lack of compliance has previously hindered the government’s capacity to implement effective traceability measures and monitor industry growth.

By tightening oversight, regulators aim to create a predictable and secure environment for both investors and consumers. Standardising the infrastructure will also prevent technological fragmentation, ensuring that various electric vehicles can seamlessly access charging facilities regardless of the location or operator.

As Uganda embraces cleaner transportation alternatives, these forthcoming regulations are expected to provide the necessary legal backing to protect users and foster sustainable growth within the local green economy.
