Parents in Uganda have been strongly cautioned against abandoning their child-rearing responsibilities by offloading them onto relatives under the guise of busy work schedules.
Speaking at a dedication service for 53 Primary Seven candidates at Timnah Schools in Luweero District, the Bishop of Luweero Anglican Diocese, the Rt. Rev. Wilson Kisekka, warned that delegating parental duties severely undermines the future of the younger generation.
“If you don’t have time for your children, the people you believe can play the roles that are lacking in you will fail your own children,” Bishop Kisekka told the congregation. He emphasized that parenting is a God-given, indivisible responsibility that cannot be successfully outsourced.
The Bishop’s warning comes at a critical time as Primary Seven candidates nationwide prepare for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) slated for November 3 and 4, 2026. According to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB), nearly 920,000 candidates are registered to sit for this year’s exams.
With a lengthy holiday approaching after the national tests, Bishop Kisekka specifically cautioned guardians against immediately shipping their children off to live with relatives. Instead, he advised parents to actively engage with their children and nurture the practical competencies gained through the new curriculum.
Ms. Victoria Jemba, the Managing Director of Timnah Schools, supported the Bishop’s message, noting that the institution emphasizes holistic education by integrating traditional academics with hands-on technical skills. She encouraged parents to utilize the upcoming holiday to help learners build upon these valuable life skills rather than leaving them idle.
