Former Buyamba County Member of Parliament, Amos Mandela Mugerwa, has passed away at Mulago National Referral Hospital following a prolonged battle with illness. He had spent the past two months in intensive care receiving treatment for lung and throat complications.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa confirmed the death on Sunday via social media. He paid tribute to Mugerwa’s legislative service, highlighting his contributions during his tenure representing Buyamba County in the 9th and 10th Parliaments, particularly on the committee on national economy.

Mugerwa’s health challenges reportedly began shortly after the January 2026 General Election, where he ran as an independent candidate but lost the seat to the National Resistance Movement’s Gyaviira Ssemwanga.

Hailing from Kacheera Sub-county in Rakai District, Mugerwa initially worked as a Community Development Officer before entering elective politics. He first won the Buyamba seat in 2011 when it was still part of Kooki County, defeating former legislator Major (Rtd) Mugumya Magulumaali. He successfully defended his seat in 2016 after Buyamba was carved out as an independent constituency in 2015.
