As Uganda inches closer to commercial oil production, young professionals have been challenged to position themselves strategically to reap the benefits of the burgeoning sector. Court of Appeal Justice Oscar Kihika made the call while addressing the seventh graduation ceremony of the Institute of Petroleum Studies-Kampala (IPSK).

Justice Kihika, who serves as the chancellor of the institution, conferred degrees and diplomas to the Class of 2026, comprising 45 males and 16 females. He emphasized that with first oil extraction only weeks away, graduates must step up to claim available roles across the entire energy value chain.

Highlighting the progress of key national infrastructure, Justice Kihika noted that the Kingfisher development area has reached 98 percent completion, while the Tilenga project stands at 79 percent. Furthermore, the 1,443-kilometer East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) has recorded 91 percent completion, signaling a transformative era for the national economy and local employment.

IPSK Principal Mr. Patrick Ruharuza echoed similar sentiments, stressing that the graduation theme—“First Oil and Beyond: Preparing Professionals for Sustainable Energy Development”—places a heavy national responsibility on the fresh cohorts. He urged them to translate heavy energy investments into productive enterprises, reliable services, and improved livelihoods.

Uganda’s oil journey, spanning nearly two decades, is nearing fruition with first oil expected before the end of the financial year. Major projects like Kingfisher and Tilenga have advanced significantly in drilling and facility construction, while joint venture partners recently unveiled the official crude blend name, Pearl Sweet.
