As the excitement builds for this November’s Nyege Nyege Festival, organisers and brand partners have taken time to spotlight the pulse of local ingenuity. A delegation led by Uganda Waragi representatives recently visited Ramon Film Productions, famously known as Wakaliwood, nestled in the heart of Wakaliga, Rubaga.
Roy Tumwizere, Senior Brand Manager for Mainstream Spirits at Uganda Breweries Limited, explained that the visit aimed to honour some of Uganda’s most distinct creative expressions. He noted that as the country invites the world to the festival, it is vital to acknowledge artistic hubs taking local storytelling across international borders.
The delegation received a warm welcome from Wakaliwood founder Isaac G.G. Nabwana. Visitors explored the studio’s iconic filming locations, authentic costumes, and inventive props, including “Maria”—the locally welded automatic machine gun featured in the viral hit Who Killed Captain Alex? Guests also viewed the famous Wall of Death, displaying signatures of characters who met their demise in various productions.
Isaac emphasised that despite reaching global audiences, Wakaliwood remains deeply anchored in authentic Ugandan narratives. He expressed excitement about using the upcoming festival platform at Kalagala Falls to share more local creativity with the world. Mzee Isaac Bwanika, Secretary of Pearlwood, echoed these sentiments, encouraging local creatives to leverage the festival to showcase their work.
Nyege Nyege co-founder Derek Debru promised a massive 96-hour festival experience, complete with a dedicated filmmaker zone. Meanwhile, Talent Africa Group confirmed that the ‘So Ug’ Stage will feature stellar performances from top local artists like King Saha, Maro, and Etania. Through these initiatives, Uganda Waragi continues to champion local pride and authentic artistic expression.
