Raising young children is demanding for any family, but for Derrick Musoke and Mabel Namara, navigating parenthood requires immense resilience. Both partners lost their hearing during childhood due to complications from quinine injections given during malaria treatment. Despite these early life challenges, they built a life together and welcomed their firstborn son, Jeremiah, on June 8, 2021.
Welcoming a baby brought immediate anxiety regarding daily care and safety. Mr. Musoke recalls wondering how they would ever know if the baby was crying, particularly during the deep hours of the night. To solve this, he spent countless nights keeping the newborn close to his body, learning to detect subtle physical shifts and movements.
Beyond the practical hurdles at home, the couple faces deep-seated social stigma from a society that often underestimates the capabilities of deaf parents. Public doubt and misconceptions have been a constant backdrop to their family life, forcing them to rely heavily on alternative communication methods and supportive family members.
Despite the obstacles, the couple continues to nurture their children with dedication and love, proving that effective parenting transcends spoken words. Their story highlights the urgent need for greater inclusivity and understanding for persons with disabilities within Ugandan communities.
