Makerere University has taken disciplinary action against its student leadership following chaotic scenes at the weekend. The institution’s Guild President, Gracious Kadondi, has suspended the Minister for Culture, Mobilisation and Social Affairs, Edward Mutebi, for a period of 29 days.

The suspension follows a dramatic altercation during the annual Makerere University Freshers’ Ball held at the Impis Grounds. The massive event, which drew thousands of new students, featured performances from several prominent Ugandan artists including Feffe Busi, Hanz MC, Nina Roz, and Fik Fameica.

According to the suspension notice issued on November 1, the action paves the way for investigations into Mutebi’s conduct. Guild President Kadondi stated that Mutebi failed to meet the expected standard of behavior required of a guild minister. The decision was made pursuant to Article 83(1) of the Makerere University Students’ Guild Constitution 2022.

During his 29-day suspension, Mutebi is barred from exercising any duties or functions of his office and cannot represent the guild in any official capacity. He has also been instructed to return all instruments of power and office materials.

The controversy began when musician Fik Fameica took to the stage. Guild President Kadondi and her team reportedly approached the stage demanding an opportunity to address the students first. This resulted in a confrontation involving the artist, security personnel, and students who voiced their displeasure, while a separate incident also involved an unidentified individual walking naked at the venue.

In response, Mutebi released a statement on social media offering an apology on behalf of the organizing committee. He explained that weather disruptions from rain forced them to cut short speeches to maximize entertainment time, a move that unfortunately sparked disagreements with stakeholders.
